Photomontages

Using the skills I've obtained through this course, I was able to make two photomontages. The photomontages I decided to make talk about political and social issues.

In this photomontage I wanted to critique the military industrial complex set up in this country. Soldiers often go to war and give up their lives, and what for? Many times these soldiers are fighting for billionaire oligarchs to fund very corrupt industires, such as the pharmacutical indsutry. Many soldiers also got addicted to perscription pills when they come home to combat mental issues they've developed while serving. It's almost as if these soldiers are fighting for their own downfall and that is what I wanted to display. To create this image I cut out the image of the soldier with a skull for a head. I then applied this cut out to a faded American flag background. Behind the soldier cut out layer, I added a pile of pills. Behind the layer of pills I added a man in a suit with a dollar bill for a head. Finally I added the words "What are we fighting for?" at the top.

In this photomontage I wanted to display the feeling of being alone in a crowd, or just not feeling real at all. To portray this I used a background of a crowd of people. I then cut out an image of a character from the anime "Cowboy Bebop". This character is named Spike, he is known to be sad and lonely so I thought he would be fitting. I also used a fictional cartoon character to portray the feeling of not feeling real. I then cut out the front portion of the crowd of people and moved that layer to the top so the cut out of Spike looked liked he was in the crowd. After this I created a white rectangle behind Spike, then added black streaks to give off the appearance of rain. I did this to isolate Spike even more, to even further portray that feeling like you're alone in a crowd of people.
